We have wrapped up the Christmas Season here at FIRST Family Services and are happy to announce that 347 families with 582 children were served.

Christmas Assistance

FIRST Family Services is taking application for Christmas assistance. This is for children 12 and under. Please call the office for an appointment.

Trunk or Treat at Lincoln Community Center

A good time was had by all at the Lincoln Trunk or Treat, with an estimated crowd of 600 to 700. We had pumpkins, ladybugs, ghosts and witches. It was great to see all the children dressed up and having fun.

Press Release for Tobacco-Free Youth Program

FIRST Family Service Center has been awarded a $31,000 grant again this year for Tobacco-Free Youth from the Alabama Department of Public Health to teach Lifeskills in our local schools. This is the fifth year FIRST has received this grant and Connie Gaines and Sharon Burton have been the Tobacco Prevention and Control Coordinators for the last three years. They teach over 250 sixth graders every week in Henderson, Graham, Salter and R.L. Young Elementary Schools in the City of Talladega, plus Stemley Road Elementary School in Talladega County. They also have a group of students at Talladega High School who are interested in issues pertaining to stopping the use of tobacco called the YEP or Youth Empowerment Program. In addition to these programs, the grant also enables them to have a N-O-T Program which is "Not on Tobacco", for teens at Talladega High School who want to quit smoking.

Likeskills teaches the dangers of tobacco, alcohol and drug use plus other skills that the youth of today have to deal with. Self esteem, anger, anxiety, communication skills, how advertising influences and conflict resolution are a few of the other classes taught.

FIRST receives $31,000 grant from Alabama Department of Public Health

FIRST is excited to announce receipt of a grant from Alabama Department of Public Health to continue the Lifeskills Program in our local schools.
Lifeskills is a program that covers 18 classes about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco, how to handle anger, violence in the media, communication skills, among other "Lifeskills" needed for today's youth. American Smoke Out, Through With Chew and Kick Butts Day.

In addition to the Lifeskills classes, we also have what is know as our YEP students at Talladega High School. The 'Youth Empowerment Program' students have classes about their city government, how it is run , and the names of the officials in the government and even attend Talladega City Council Meetings. The purpose of this program is basically to learn about how they can affect matters regarding tobacco issues in their city. The YEP students also serve as mentors to the younger students, judge our contests and also do surveillance of their campus for smokers, anonymously.

This grant also allow the continuation of the NOT (Not on Tobacco) Program at Talladega High School. This 10 week tobacco cessation program targets teens that smoke or us spit/chew tobacco. The program is free and open to 9-12 graders at Talladega High School.

Toys for Christmas Cruise In

Talladega Classic Car Club is doing a Cruise In to raise money and collect toys for Christmas. The toys and money collected will benefit the children of Talladega County who would otherwise not have Christmas. Come out and show your support.

Lincoln's Senior Citizen Day

FIRST Family Service Center was at the Lincoln City Center for the Senior celebration. They had food, bingo and live music. We had information available on aging, eating healthy and the food assistance program. Fun was had by everyone in attendance.

FIRST Participates in Coosa Valley Electric Coop's Annual Meeting

Once again this September, FIRST employees loaded up their brochures and handouts and headed to Coosa Valley Electric Coop Annual Board Meeting on September 11, 2010. For several years, FIRST has been invited by Coosa Valley Electric Coop to set up at the meeting and provide information to the customers about resources available in the community.

The Cooperative did an amazing job of providing food, activities and prizes on this day and we saw over 3314 people that morning.

Thanks Coosa Valley for the opportunity!
